CALLUM Jones made a successful return to the Cornwall Grand Prix Series as he claimed third place at the annual An Res race in Helston on Sunday.

The runner who also lives in the town was appearing in his first run for Cornwall Athletics Club of the season during his Easter break from studies at Bristol University.

During the ten mile race which started and finish near the boating lake, Jones was part of a leading group which dominated the running which saw competitors run across mixed terrain including roads, coastal paths and the sand at Loe Bar.

At one stage the student was keeping up with Dan Rodgers, but just after the halfway mark the Launceston Road Runner started to stretch out his lead and eventually win the race in a course record of 54:55.

Jones did his best to hang onto second place but was pulled back by another group of runners with fellow Cornwall AC man Colin Snook overtaking him as they passed the Culdrose sports fields.

Falmouth's Paul Smith finished fourth in a time of 57:50 which also won him the Men's 40-44 age category while Helston's Paul Whear came sixth and secured the 45-49 trophy.

Yet another of Cornwall AC's Helston contingent, super vet John Telford, who finished a very creditable 22nd overall, won the 55-59 Veterans category by almost three minutes.

Aaron Benney was Mile High's sole representative in the Men's race crossing the line in 12th position, one place and eight seconds ahead of the leading Falmouth Road Runner Ian Ferguson.

In the Ladies race Kathryn Dormer, of Falmouth Road Runners, was one of two local runners to win a prize in the Veteran categories claiming first place in the 65-69 age group.

Petrina Jones from Helston won the third place prize in the Veteran 45-49 section.

Falmouth Road Runners member Issy Steele who has returned home after spending the winter working as a nanny in Paris showed she has not lost much of her fitness finishing seventh overall.

Mile High's Kathryn Martin came home in 16th place and Helston's Elisha Hurst, a member of Cornwall AC, making a successful return to racing after a long absence looking after her baby, finishing 19th.
