A HUGE entry of 97 took part in the Frank Harris Medal Qualifier at Falmouth Golf Club on Saturday, writes Keith Rashleigh.

The top 16 go on to the knock-out stages where they will battle it out for the largest cup in the club.

Young Ben Browning, playing off a handicap of four, deservedly won with a brilliant one over par gross 73, including two`s at the second, fifth and 11th holes.

Adrian Stok took the runners-up spot with a steady round of 70 while third went to Andrew McKnight, who also scored 70 including birdies at the second and 17th holes.

Browning's work was not over for the weekend as he then played a part in the club's junior team who defeated Killiow 4-2 on Sunday in the George Bolitho Cup group stage.

He was joined by captain Kieran Ashley, Liam Ashley, Brodie Kemp, Callum Davis and Archie Fox for the match played at the course on the outskirts of Truro.

The club also recently held their second Golfer/Non-golfer Fun Day in aid of the Friends of St Mary’s School.

Over 70 experience and inexperienced players signed up and much enjoyment was had with putting competitions, a raffle and fabulous buffet put on by the club's catering staff.

Theresa Brierley, chairman of FOSM’s, thanked Joanne Van Reijn and Alison Thomas for organising and participating in the event and the sponsors for providing raffle prizes, adding she was delighted with the support as more than £1,000 was raised, which will help to provide equipment for the school.

Santander have also offered to match the funds and this will be a huge boost to the charity.

In the competition held on the day, Nick and Helen Morrison topped the leaderboard with 22 points, putting them ahead of Tony and Jan Schorah who scored 20.

This Saturday is the first 18 holes of the prestigious Falmouth Hotel Bowl with the second round and presentation the following week.
