Falmouth Golf Club’s Festival Week started on Monday with the Trefula Cup Four Better Ball competition sponsored by Tre`care Ltd, which was won by Brodie Kemp and Connor Davidson with a brilliant performance which yielded 47 stableford points.

Runners up, thanks to a superb back nine of 23 points, were Paul Martin and Barry Lynch with a fine total of 44 points. Third, also with 44 points, were Gordon Kelly and Dave Walsh on the back six countback from Mike Hodges and Dennis Nicholls. Fifth place went to John Crossley and Paul Upperton (Budock Vean) with 42 points.

Mike Hodges won nearest the pin sponsored by club pro Nick Rogers at the fifth hole. Nearest the pin on the eighth, sponsored by DC Hughes, the owner of Falmouth GC, was Andrew Kearns.

Tuesday saw the Seniors Three Ball Better Ball open stableford which was well won by the Killiow GC triumvirate of John Bacon, John Crowson and Des Richards with an untouchable 85 points. Runners up were David Plummer, Chris Dowling and Brian Norris with 82 points. Third were 81 points were Tony Drew,. Bill Ward and Colin Ross and fourth were Gerry Storey, Chris Beer and Paul Jose also with 81 points. Nearest the pin at the eleventh, sponsored by Nick Rogers, was Alan McKay.

Wednesday saw the Ladies out in force for the three ball betterball stableford generously sponsored by Angela Cortis owner of The March Hare. The winners were Lyn Innes. Jo Munday and Rachael Curnow with a grand haul of 82 points. Runners up were Rowena Lowson. Cathryn Hewlett and Heather Tinder with 78 points. Third were Liz Shone. Chris Luff and Theresa Brierly also with 78 points and fourth were Angela Cortis. Barbara Roker and Kath Kelly with 76 points. 78 Ladies played with 31 from clubs around Cornwall.

Thursday saw Scott Pedlar win the 11 Hole Classic with a brilliant score of 27 stableford points. Runner up was Jim Sheppard with another excellent score of 26 points. Dave Tangye also played very well to card 24 points. Brodie Kemp won nearest the pin at the eleventh hole.

On Friday the popular Texas Scramble sponsored by St Austell Brewery had to be abandoned because of heavy rain and fog. This will be replayed later in the month.

Saturday was the Individual Medal event which saw Nigel Molin making a welcome return to form to card a fine net 67 to win the £125 first prize voucher by one stroke. On his way Nigel drove the par four thirteenth hole to set up a crucial birdie. Runner up was Dave Ambrose. Third was Scott Pedlar with a net 69. Pete Lewis took fourth prize also with a net 69 and Richard Browning was fifth with a net 70. His grandson, Ben Browning, collected the best gross prize with a sizzling two over par gross 74. The Ladies section was won by Carol Mitcham with a net 77. Theresa Brierley was runner up with a net 78 and third was Frankie Allsopp with a net 79.

The junior section was well won by young Archie Fox with a best of the day net 67. Andy Anderson won nearest the pin at the eighth and Mark Carter won nearest the pin at the tenth.

Saturday night was presentation night and the prize table was most impressive. This was followed by a superb performance by live band The Flaming Infidels which saw the clubhouse bouncing to some great music.

The prestigious Pennance cups mixed open was replayed on Sunday and will be reported on next week.
