HELEN Glover maintained her awesome winning streak on the water as she and rowing partner Heather Stanning claimed gold at the second World Cup meeting of 2015.

On Sunday the duo, who are undefeated in last 33 outings together, cruised to victory in the women's coxless pairs race at Varese in Italy, completing the 2,000m course in 6:54.67 and finishing just under a boat length ahead of the USA's Megan Kalmoe and Kerry Simmonds.

New Zealand's Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler came third.

Right from the start Glover, who grew up in Penzance, and Stanning led the way with a big gap opening between them and the other five boats by the time they reached the 500m mark.

They continued to motor in front of their opponents over the next 1,000m to build what would prove to be an unassailable lead before easing off slightly in the final quarter of the race.

Last month the pair picked up the European Rowing Championship title as they build up to an Olympic title defence in Rio next year.

Their gold in Italy was one of four picked up by the British team during the event with wins also coming in the lightweight women's double, men's quadruple sculls and men's eight.

Lucerne in Switzerland is the venue of the next World Cup regatta with the boats hitting the water between July 10 and 12.
