AFTER bad weather altered plans a few days earlier, the Pennance Cups was finally played at Falmouth Golf Club last Sunday, writes Keith Rashleigh.

The prestigious competition is normally contested on the opening day of the club's Festival Week, but this year had to be postponed due to the on course conditions.

With this rearrangement, the cups became the last to be played for during the annual event which was celebrating it's 20th anniversary this year.

Coming out on top where Simon Cooper and Lyn Innes who bagged an excellent haul of 39 points, putting them two ahead of Brian and Donna Craig and third placed Bob and Jane Wooldridge.

Finishing fourth were Micky Doust and Kim Munday with 36 points, while 51 balls were won by Tony Drew and Barbara Roker after they achieved the only two of the day.

Hundreds of players took to the course over the week with special thanks going to the March Hare and St Austell Brewery who provided sponsorship for parts of the event.

After the week finished, director of golf Steve Burrows said: "I would like to thank all the staff, who have worked tirelessly over the week, for their efforts and would also like to thank the volunteers and the sponsors for their help and generosity."

A putting competition run by Arno Canale raised £203 which will be split between Motor Neurone Disease Association, the RNLI and the On Course Foundation.

The Texas Scramble, which was due to take place on the Friday but had to be cancelled due to fog, will now take place towards the end of July.

Elsewhere on the course, Ross Taylor deservedly won the Churchill Medal on Saturday with a solid net 64 which included a birdie at the sixth hole and double bogeys at the 15th and 17th.

Matt Higham was runner-up with a steady round of 65, taking second place on countback from Any Morris who carded birdies at the third and fourth holes.

Paul Kneebone was fourth with a total of 66 which saw him birdie the sixth and 15th, but the real highlight of the day was Robert Edwards' hole-in-one on the second.

On Wednesday, Rik Shaw won the Monthly Stableford sponsored by Kelsall Steele Investment Services with his haul of 39 points, beating Chris Dowling by two.
