BRIGHT sun and a cool northerly breeze drew over 20 boats from Royal Cornwall Yacht Club to the start area just north of St Mawes Castle on Friday to give a good beat to the North Bank, writes Harold Martin.

The four multihulls sliced towards the windward mark, quickly spreading out into a long line.

In IRC One, seven boats crossed the line and as they sailed north the patchy wind started to swing to the north west and one boat who had started at the eastern end of the line got to the first mark without tacking.

Before the race Jackdaw were short of crew, so they changed headsails to a smaller one because they were not heavy enough to sit out the bigger one.

After turning the mark, spinnakers were hoisted for the run south and Pascos Jaguar closely followed by Too Insatiable were well clear of the group lead by Jackdaw, Daring and Per Elisa as they had to thread their way through the later starting IRC2 fleet beating north.

When the second fleet turned the windward mark, they too hoisted spinnakers and ran south with one boat well in the lead and the bunch following ran at almost identical speeds holding their formation followed by Tai Mo Shun 100m behind.

Unfortunately, well south of Pendennis Point they failed to find the downwind mark because it had been lifted so that their race was abandoned.

In U class, Paul Collins in the Sadler 25 Moonlighter pulled away from the opposition to win by well over 11 minutes on corrected time.

The fleets mix when coming up the harbour to the finish and as the fairway narrows the different speeds and ability to tack cause problems for the helms and crew of both the overtaking and slower boats so tension mount as they near the line.
