HELEN Glover has impressed once again by tasting victory in yesterday’s women’s coxless pair race in Lucerne for the world cup along with Heather Stanning, writes John Olive.

The rower from Penzance won for the 27th time on the trot with her Olympic gold medal winning partner as the duo climbed on top of the podium at the World Cup regatta in Lucerne yesterday.

In the final, Glover and Stanning had to hold off the New Zealand pair of Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler, but the British boat got home in first place, giving them the perfect preparation for the upcoming World Championships, which start in France next month.

After the race, Glover said "I felt like we were in control through all of it.

"In some sense, I guess, we expected a bit more of a race from them."

Stanning added: "That was really pleasing because Helen called the race perfectly.

"We saw New Zealand put in a push but Helen said ‘stay there’. We had the stimulus outside the boat but we felt contained within it."

Glover and Stanning got off to an explosive start and built a length lead over the New Zealand boat in second place.

The GB pair began to generate more power at the 500m mark and after 1500m, Glover and Stanning showed no signs that there were tiring and powered on.

However, Prendergast and Gowler had other ideas as they began to gain more speed and gradually started gaining on the British crew.

Despite this, Glover and Stanning managed to hold off the powerful New Zealand boat and clinched another gold medal.
