THE BRISK afternoon breeze had almost died as a fleet of 20 boats moved towards the start line for the latest races at Royal Cornwall Yacht Club on Friday, writes Harold Martin.
With the committee boat anchored north of the Trefusis buoy, the vessels set off in a south-eastern direction before tacking onto port.
Black Dog, Daring and Miss Whiplash led the pack off in IRC One with Jackdaw and Per Elisa chasing behind.
The skippers noticed more breeze was coming from the west, so changed their tactics to utilise this as they came towards Governor before they headed into the Carrick Roads.
Meanwhile in IRC Two, following a similar route, Encore was leading the early stages of the race ahead of Tresillian, Excelle and Minx before tacking onto starboard for the slow procession to the finish.
In U Class, two Flying 15s were widely separated by 11 minutes at the finish with Moonlighter coming first over the heavily Jemalda.
As the other fleets headed for the finish, Tresillian was scuppered about two boat lengths from the line after a local tidal eddy stopped them in their tracks.
Once the crews did make it home, Too Insatiable won the IRC One race while taking the plaudits in IRC Two was Encore after their great start.
Coming behind the latter was Tai Mo Shun, skippered by Neil Chamberlain, who secured his first placing with the boat, much to his delight.
