A REMARKABLE 186 players took part in this year's President's Putter at Falmouth Golf Club on the same weekend two new holes were opened at the course, writes Keith Rashleigh.

Bob Wooldridge, the current president, expressed his delight at the huge turnout which raised cash for the On Course Foundation charity, which sees golf clubs support and encourage injured military servicemen.

Conditions on the course were perfect for the event with the weather matching as the players tested out the new holes, the ninth and tenth, and the different way of navigating the round for the first time.

Rather fittingly, former serviceman Dave Holland went on to win the competition as he came out all guns blazing, carding an eagle two at the third hole, previously the 13th.

He followed this up with birdies at both the new holes alongside the sixth and 14th to stroll into the clubhouse with a superb gross score of 68 and an untouchable 44 Stableford points.

Finishing second was Gerry Storey with his haul of 41 following a gross round of 76 while Tony Annear came third on 40, which included birdies at the third, tenth and 16th holes.

Nick Morrison claimed fourth spot with a solid 40 after hitting a birdie on the seventh and fifth place was earned by Bob Pine as he scored 39.

The ladies were also out in force and Carol Mitcham won their putter contest with a today total of 35, pipping Rebecca Beer to the title by one point.

Frankie Alsop finished third with 33, beating Carmel Connors on countback while fifth went to Lynn Innis on 30.

Junior golfers from the club were also strongly represented on the course and Tom Matthews, playing off his handicap of six, winning their competition with an excellent 37.

Connor Davidson carded the same score, but finished as runner-up on countback, with Archie Fox in third with 36.

A contest was also held for the boys academy members with Louis Ratcliffe coming out on top, Ross McKnight second and Alex Minter third.

Other prizes went to Bob Brimson for nearest to the pin while Davidson, Holland and Andy McKnight were nearest to the pin with their second shots on selected par fours.

Sean Ramsey picked up the long drive title.

Following a charity auction, Wooldridge closed the presentation by thanking everyone at the club who worked hard to make it such a special day for him, including former Falmouth Town and Truro City star Harold Jeffries, who is also a life member at the club, for starting off proceedings.

Credit was also given to Arno Canale for running the putting competition, Donna Craig for serving refreshments out on course and all the sponsors for their generous donations.
