FESTIVE darts could be coming to Falmouth this year following the success of a competition which was held for the first time on Sunday.

The Falmouth Summer Darts Tournament made its debut with 63 players participating around eight boards set up in the clubhouse at Bickland Park.

Paul Cook was crowned as the first champion after he defeated Rob Ruberry 6-3 in the final, while David Bastian won the plate contest held alongside the main event.

Tournament organiser Darren Green said the day had gone down so well with the players, they are now looking at holding another competition at Christmas.

Green said: "We had so many positive comments.

"Once the competition was finished, I had about 40 people come up to shake my hand saying how much they enjoyed it and that we should organise a Christmas tournament.

"The Penryn and District Darts League AGM is being held on August 16 and we've decided to bring it up then to see what the interest is like and whether we should go ahead with it."

Ahead of the start, the players were split into eight groups with the top four from each progressing to the knock-out stages.

The standard of play was high during the tournament with highlights including eventual champion Cook averaging just under 90 with three darts in his semi final win.

In the other semi, Ruberry threw a ten dart leg to wow the crowd watching.

A tense finale was had, but Cook managed to hold his nerve to average 25.95 per dart and claim the £300 prize money along with the winner's trophy.

Following the completion of the tournament, Green paid tribute to his grandfather Ronald Searle, who sadly passed away on Thursday.

"I would like to thank my grandad," he said.

"He got me into darts when I was young.

"I didn't want to dedicate the whole tournament on the day to him as I felt it might be a bit selfish, but without him I would not have been in a position to organise a tournament like this."
