A YOUNG seaman from Penryn has been selected as part of the British team taking part in a world championship next year.

Reuben Thompson will be onboard the 38ft traditional rowing and sailing gig boat being used for the Atlantic Challenge International Contest of Seamanship in Roskilde, Denmark, next July.

Alongside the British team, 11 other countries will be taking part in the competition which will go ahead over eight days.

Crews will be tested on their rowing, sailing, ropework, navigation and general seamanship skills and Thompson, who has recently returned from a training camp in Scotland, said he is looking forward to the challenge and being in Denmark.

Thompson said: "I am back home now from the training camp and I am missing the tremendous team spirit and I can’t wait to get back in the gig again.

"I have also made a start on learning basic Danish so I can meet the local people."
