THE start line for the latest race at the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club was on the eastern shore 500m north of the water tower and 20 boats milled around the committee boat waiting, writes Harold Martin.

Exiting from the docks was the cruise liner Europa, escorted by the pilot and the harbour master, so this delayed any action until it was south of the West Narrows.

The multihulls got away to the Trefusis mark, but on passing it to port the wind coming down the harbour allowed them to run south east.

Further delays were caused by problems with the timing of the following fleets.

Only two IRC One boats started with many in Fowey and Vindscreen Viper hoisted red reacher to leave their solitary behind.

There was a bigger fleet in IRC Two with nine boats taking part, beating to Trefusis led by Encore who increased the advantage after hoisting the spinnaker.

En route to the Lugo, Encore slowly pulled away and after passing the mark, they squared off and ran directly into St Mawes harbour.

A trio of Sunbeams sailed together south west from the start and they stayed close on the diagonal south east run towards the Lugo.

In U class, also well down in entries, Cold Feet was clear ahead of Moonlighter as they ran downwind, but on the long beat back, the Sadler 25 overtook and won easily.

From Pendennis Point, the multihulls reached close to the headland with Cracker Jack pulling away from Ultra Violet and Firefly.

Out across the bay, Vindscreen Viper arrived at the bay mark in the lead and after turning he pulled even further ahead, his opponent was a newly arrived and not properly entered boat which looked promising for the future.
