Helston Hornets, a netball club based at Helston’s sports centre, is looking for new members in 2016.

The ladies' Hornet netball team were thrilled to win the Back to Netball tournament ran by Cornwall Netball at the Sir Ben Ainslie Sports Centre, Truro in early December.

The nine-strong team with their coach Leeza Williams played Penzance, Falmouth, Storm and CSM teams, with the aim of finishing in the top three and surprised themselves by winning the tournament.

Leeza Willams said: “Having played netball at various levels for 26 yrs predominantly for Lastonet Netball Club and receiving some of the best coaching available, it's great to give a little back. These ladies were of mixed ability back in the summer but have really given their all, showing commitment and determination. In November they played their first friendly against a combination team from Lastonet and lost by just 4 goals (25-21) and two weeks later hosted CSM Penryn Uni team beating them 14 - 3. The festival of netball was the climax to this year and I am so very proud of them.”

The Hornets were revitalised when Leeza started coaching them in the summer and with a group of over 20 members are now looking at developing a team to enter the local netball league later in 2016.

Rachel Jones, who joined back in April said: “I felt a bit silly when I first joined as hadn’t played in over 20 years and was very unfit and was trying to lose weight after the birth of my children. Since joining the Hornets I have completed a couple of charity runs and have lost lots of weight! I love my Tuesday nights now as its so much fun you don’t even realise you’re actually exercising - and we have such a laugh.”

The Hornets are looking for new players to play in the team and for ladies looking to get fit and have fun to train against them. Training is on a Tuesday night at Helston’s sport centre in the main hall from 8pm to 9pm and all skill sets and abilities are welcome to join. You can contact them on their Facebook page ‘Helston Netball – Hornets’ for further information. Training starts again in the New Year on Tuesday 5th January.
