Weymouth 2 Falmouth 4

FALMOUTH continued their return to winning ways starting the New Year with 2 convincing performances at the weekend.

Saturday saw Falmouth travel to Weymouth who are placed three positions above them in the West Premiership League 2B.

The away team started strongly with excellent interlinking play between the forward line up of Emma Bragg, Clare Hudson and Rachel Tatlow well supported by midfielders Amy Tatlow, Billie Wood and Viv Cobner.

However against the run of play it was Weymouth who were the first to get a result on the score sheet.

Falmouth responded well with Amy Tatlow and Hudson’s shots going just over the crossbar and wide of the post respectively. Shortly before half time Falmouth’s efforts were finally rewarded during a well-worked penalty corner.

Amy Tatlow met the ball, skilfully dummied a Weymouth defender and then set up Cobner to convert a cross into the Weymouth goal with a reverse stick shot.

After the break Falmouth continued to threaten the Weymouth defence with the strike partnership of centre forward Hudson and right wing Rachael Tatlow proving to be particularly lethal.

Hudson’s first goal came from a midfield break which led to a 2 on 1 where Tatlow easily out-manoeuvred the Weymouth goalkeeper and set Hudson up with a perfectly placed cross.

Hudson’s second goal came from another Tatlow cross which she smashed with a perfectly timed strike into the Weymouth goal. Falmouth’s fourth goal again involved Hudson who crossed the ball inside the home team’s D.

Falmouth midfielder Amy Figgins was the first to react, diving to deflect the ball into the home team’s goalmouth. For

the last 15 minutes the Falmouth defence of Joint Player of the Match Mandy Langdon, Megan Cookson, Rachel Medd and Hannah Royle continued to work hard to break down Weymouth’s play.

The final goal of the game came from a lightening Weymouth strike which goalkeeper Hannah Bowman had no chance of stopping.

Plym Valley ll 0 Falmouth ll 4

Falmouth seconds travelled to Lipson College, Plymouth, for their first fixture since the Christmas

break. The visitors started slowly and allowed Plym Valley to go on the attack. However, Falmouth

soon took control and were unlucky not to take an early lead when a strike from Iona Middleton hit

the post.

Falmouth had a period of good pressure as the mid-field of Molly Phillips, Iona Middleton,

Kerry Thorne and Player of the Match, Suzanne Bull worked hard but they were unable to take any

of their chances as the Plym Valley defence stood firm, with their goalkeeper having an excellent

game.

The breakthrough came when Amy Shaw put through a good ball from midfield to Alice

Bowman on the right wing, who used her speed to beat a defender before striking the ball into goal

from the edge of the circle.

Falmouth should have built on their slender lead with all the forwards

and midfield involved in the attack but the home team defended in numbers and blocked all their

attempts. In the last ten minutes of the first half Plym Valley had their best period of the match but

the defence of Hannah Whear, Philippa Eddy and Becky Morris cut out their attempts and limited

their shots on goal although June Moore was called upon to make several good saves in this period.

In the second half Falmouth were once again the stronger team but they had to wait until midway

through the half before Alice Bowman took the ball down the right wing and crossed to Amy Shaw in

the centre who rounded the ‘keeper to slot the ball home. Falmouth were now able to play with

more confidence and the third goal soon followed. Amy Shaw took the ball down the wing and

crossed to the waiting Vic Pryor who was able to slip a well-placed ball around the ‘keeper. The

fourth goal was the second for Amy Shaw as she was in a good position to push the ball into goal

from a reverse stick pass from Vic Pryor on the left.

A well-deserved victory for Falmouth who were pleased with their win but disappointed not to have converted more of their chances.
