Falmouth 7, Newquay 6 (after penalty flicks)

At 12.00pm it was the turn of Falmouth 1 to take to the pitch. In a fast paced and fiercely competitive game Falmouth retained the Cornwall Hockey Association County Cup against Newquay. Having been narrowly beaten by Newquay in the final league game of the season two weeks ago Falmouth were determined to avenge their loss. At half time the score was even at 2-2.

Falmouth’s first goal came from Clare Hudson taking advantage of a penalty corner. The second from supreme passing between midfielders Billie Wood and Tatum Godwin to forwards Rachael Tatlow and Hudson, who set up Vic Pryor to hit the target. After the break Falmouth went ahead for the first time with Hudson’s second goal of the game.

Despite Falmouth dominating, Newquay equalised against the run of play. With the score 3 a piece at the final whistle the game was settled on penalty flicks. After 5 flicks each and with the flick score at 3-3, it went to sudden death. Billie Wood stepped up for Falmouth and calmly sent the ball into the bottom corner. Hero of the day went to Hannah Bowman, Falmouth Keeper, who had already saved 2 flicks and now saved the well taken and positioned Newquay flick to give Falmouth the trophy, winning 7-6.

Earlier in the day, Falmouth 2’s started their Plate match against Duchy, who were the pre-match favourites, having taking six points off Falmouth in the league and finishing one place above them.

Already down to 11 players due to injury, illness and unavailability an injury to Kerry Thorne after only five minutes meant that they played nearly all of the match with only 10 players.

Falmouth reorganised and managed to hold Duchy for periods of the game but the more experienced Duchy team were able to take advantage of the extra player and were 2-0 up at the interval. Falmouth had their chances, Duchy defenders clearing off the line on two occasions. Kirstie Brown playing in goal, rather than in defence, had a busy game and made some excellent saves. After the break Falmouth continued to work hard and good team spirit kept them motivated but Duchy managed to score 3 further goals to give a final score of 5-0.
