This year’s Sigma 33 South West Championships, sponsored by Yachtgrandprix, was attended by five boats - four Cornwall-based and one from the Solent.

On each of the two days three windward-leeward races were held in Falmouth Bay followed by a regatta-type course finishing off at St Mawes harbour.

The first race was held in a light southerly wind and Afrita of St Mawes led from start to finish, but it was to be her only victory of the weekend.

There was a delay before the second race could start while the wind swung through 180 degrees and then died away to nothing, but it wasn’t long before a line of breeze approaching from the west – the forecast direction – could be seen approaching, and racing got under way again.

All three of the day’s remaining races were won by Excelle, the last of them by barely a length from Prospero, the Solent boat.

The breeze remained relatively steady throughout Sunday, generally from the west and up to 20 knots at times. Prospero won the first race of the day and Excelle the second.

In the third race Excelle and Duellist were over the line at the start and both failed to go back and this handed another race win to Prospero.

After a general recall in the final race, Prospero had a small advantage at the last mark, barely a quarter of a mile from the finish, but a spinnaker error allowed Excelle to overtake her and gain a fifth race win and overall victory.

Overall result: 1, Excelle (7pts); 2, Prospero (10 pts); 3, Afrita of St Mawes (14 pts); 4, Duellist (24 pts); 5, Brightwork (27pts).
