Runners, swimmers and cyclists, young and old, experienced and novice, will take part in the Falmouth Triathlon, part of the Tempus Cornwall Triathlon Series, due to take place on Sunday.

Tempus, the Cornish charity that runs 14 leisure centres and holds numerous sporting events across the county, is encouraging the community join in the event, which will be the only open water event in the Series.

The triathlon starts at 8am on the morning with a 750m swim from Gyllyngvase Beach.

This is followed by a 23km cycle to Mawnan Smith and back along the same route. The race then culminates with a 5km run along the sea front, looping around Pendennis Point and finishing back at Gyllyngvase beach.

Rachel Haspell, Events Support Officer at Tempus Leisure, said: “The Falmouth Triathlon is the only open water triathlon within the series.

"Not only do the competitors have to contend with the sea conditions and overtaking competitors but they also have to avoid the jellyfish. Falmouth offers stunning views for competitors and spectators and we feel so lucky to have this on our doorstep.”

The Triathlon Series is being sponsored by leading renewable energy provider, Clean Earth.

Heidi Master from the company added: “Clean Earth is very pleased to be supporting this year’s triathlon series. We are very passionate about supporting local events and bringing communities closer together.”

Tempus is warning local road users that there will be increased traffic around Gyllyngvase throughout the morning and a number of cyclists and runners on the roads from 8am until 11.30am. A short section of Cliff Road along the back of Gyllyngvase Beach will be closed from the early hours of Sunday morning until 12.30pm.
