A team of 10 youth members from Gyllyngvase SLSC travelled to the World Club Surf Life Saving Championships last week in Noordwijk, Holland.

After four days of tough competition against the best athletes in the world, they did Falmouth and the club proud, finishing an incredible 16th out of 84 clubs.

The team even managed to bring home some World medals.

15-year-old Theo Fleming, who is a head boy at Falmouth School and has been training with the club since the age of seven, won gold in the 2km beach run. He stormed ahead of the 53 strong field, claiming the club’s first ever world title.

A team of 4 also earned a bronze medal in the oceanman relay.

The oceanman is the showpiece event of the championships and requires the athletes to complete a multi-discipline endurance course using a number of beach lifeguarding skills. In the relay one competitor completes their discipline before tagging their teammate. James Drage (surf ski), Euan Dungaval (swim), Ben Norton (board) and Jack Lushington (run) had a superb performance claiming third place against the best teams from New Zealand, Australia, USA and South Africa to name a few.

Euan also finished an extraordinary fourth place in the individual oceanman event.

Other notable results were Theo Flemming finishing ninth in the beach sprint, Nell Packer placing sixth in the 2km beach run, Rosie Boulton placing 11th in the board race and James Drage coming 5th in the surf ski race.

The beach sprint relay team of Amy Walker, Niamh Symons, Nell Packer and Rosie Boulton finished 7th, one place ahead of a team from neighbouring club Portreath.

The boys’ team weren’t outdone, also finishing in 7th place.

Matthew Trebilcock, Gylly’s youth team coach said: “The team has performed fantastically well and have been a pleasure and privilege to be with. Thanks to Sessions Surf Shop in Falmouth and Saints Screen Printing who helped to provide the team kit.”

Gylly’s first ever World Interclub team have finished in an incredible 16th place out of 84 competing clubs… absolutely awesome, well done to the whole team!”
