A YOUNG sailor from Flushing has won the Silver Dolphin Trophy at a prestigious event near Munich, Germany.

Will Laity, of Restronguet Sailing Club, competed in the regatta in typical late summer conditions in Europe, having to work with tricky, light winds at Lake Chiemsee Yacht Club.

Will's performances earned him the 50 year-old trophy and the host club subsequently invited him to become a member, as well training with the club and double Optimist world champion Tina Lutz at Lake Garda, Italy, next month.

The Penryn College student has already spent some time with the German Olympian, having been treated to a 45-minute sail in her 49erFX.

Lutz is currently coaching the youth at the Chiemsee YC, because the club supported her while she was a youth sailor.

Will, aged 13, was also coached by several other former world champion sailors during the week in Bavaria.

He learnt to sail at Mylor sailing school, having picked up the RYA level 1 to 4.

He then moved on to Restronguet Sailing Club and started race training there, before qualifying for the Royal Yacht Association's southwest zone squad, which is a part RYA-funded "pathway to podium" winter youth training programme.
