Falmouth Golf Club deservedly made it through to the last eight of the Cornwall Golf Union Presidents Cup against St Mellion on Sunday at Carlyon Bay.

It was a perfect day for golf and the Carlyon Bay course was in superb condition. The format is nine singles matches with three players from each category of 1. 2 & 3.

Falmouth put in a strong performance to overcome fancied St Mellion in a high quality encounter. Rob Eccleston put Falmouth ahead by winning 3 & 2 only for Ben Regan to equalise by winning his match by 4 & 2. Roger Fairburn restored Falmouth`s lead by winning 3 & 2 before St Mellion`s Mark Slater restored parity with a fine 6 & 4 win. Barry Haywood then put St Mellion three matches to two ahead by winning 1 up.

Falmouth then produced the sting in the tail with Nick Chinn enjoying a superb 8 & 7 win quickly followed by Paul Collins 4 & 3 win before John Gresson secured Falmouth`s place in the next round with another solid 4 & 3 win. Ray A Clark put the icing on the cake as he came back from 1 down to win the last two holes to win by 1 up and give a final score of Falmouth 6 St Mellion 3.
