Following on from Camborne School of Mines's shinty teams have enjoyed a busy first term.

First up was the London Festival of Shinty, where CSM players were representing Cornwall Shinty Club.

Despite some outstanding performances, including a goal from CSM Press Officer, James Beaumont, on his Cornwall debut, Cornwall finished runners up to London Camanachd, going down 6-3 in the final.

The next day, CSM travelled to Hyde Park to play the inaugural Shinty-Hurling match against Imperial College London GAA team, with a man-of-the-match performance from Jack Gleadowe helping CSM to victory.

October saw the first Oxfordshire 6s tournament, which saw teams from all around take part, with some travelling from as far as Dundee University to play.

Dundee As were the overall winners but CSM finished as well-deserved runners up, with captain Patrick Hutchinson scoring three goals.

Many of CSM’s talented ladies represented Cornwall Ladies as they beat Dundee Ladies to win their first ever trophy, the Oxford Ladies 6s shield.

In November, Newquay hosted the annual Lowender Peran Festival. CSM played a combined London and Oxford team in a six-a-side friendly, sadly losing 3-1.

However, the CSM players redeemed themselves by playing a key role in Cornwall Shinty Club, beating the International Select 7-0, with Vice President Luke Wilkinson scoring twice and new recruit Harley Birchley scoring one in the rout. CSM Ladies filled the majority of the Cornwall Ladies side, who beat the International Ladies Select 4-1, with both Heather Tewnion and former student Libby Walters getting on the scoresheet.

December marked the Town-Gown, an annual fixture between CSM and the combined forces of local teams Mabe and Mylor Cons, the super-team known as Monstantine.

This year the fixture was the opening fixture in another new tournament, the Western Tri-series, which will see CSM, Monstantine and the newly formed Devon team all play each other in a series of matches. Alas, for CSM, the “Monsters” once again took the accolades, with a 5-1 win.

The SW Shinty 6s League has once again been a roaring success, with this year proving to be the closest on record.

CSM Gold claimed a sensational victory against Devon, with club president Ailish Kelly bagging a hat-trick and relative newbie Jamie Cranston netting a brace, with Gold captain Beaumont rounding off the scoring in a 6-2 win.

As the league takes a break for Christmas, CSM and Cornwall continue to train all through the holiday period and will meet again for the resumption of the league on January 15.

FXU also provides a range of support and recreational opportunities for students. They have close links with voluntary and sporting organisations across Cornwall and are keen to develop more working relationships with local partners to enable students to participate in activities and make a positive contribution to the wider community.
