The eagerly anticipated Rugby versus Football golf match at Falmouth Golf Club lived up to expectations despite continuous rain.

It is a credit to all who played on a day only for the intrepid, writes Keith Rashleigh.

Played in four ball better ball format the Rugby players just edged it by 6 1/2 to 5 1/2.

The game changing match saw the experienced Ian “Henry” Churcher, who is the driving force of this competition, partnered by young Kieran Ashley against Pete Lewis (who played on his own due to a late withdrawal). Pete heroically led by three up with just four holes to play but for all his brilliance he was overhauled and Kieran stepped in to win the vital point with a birdie at the last.

The other winning pairs on the day were: Rugby pairs - Dave Holland & Martyn Wooltarton, Scott Pedlar & Keith Thacker, William McLean and Tony Drew, Marek Churcher & Angus McArthur, Grant Nicholls (captain) and Pete Chambers (next year's captain).

Football winners were: Paul Caunter & Robert Eccleston, Mike Watmore & Keith Rashleigh, Paul Kneebone & Mike Hodges, Phil Jones & Andy Kemp, Andy McKnight & Matt Roberts.

The event was followed by an evening of competition between the Rugby and Football teams in the bar organised by Andy Parry and refereed by Mike Hodges.

A mixture of skill, knowledge and drinking ability ended in a sporting draw.

Kathy Wells (pictured) did Falmouth Golf Club proud last Wednesday as she won the Ladies South West Veterans Golf Association Fulford Bowl at Lyme Regis which is a parkland course situated on a cliff edge and was in magnificent condition. Despite the blustery weather which made scoring quite difficult Kathy carded an excellent 37 stableford points to win by two from her nearest competitors.
