Another pivotal weekend awaits for our local sides, with the focus on rugby as the season reaches its final stages.

Falmouth are in for a nervous final afternoon as they face St Ives in a bid to avoid the drop, while Penryn will aim to bounce back from last week’s defeat to Saltash with a win over Tavistock.

On to football, and Falmouth Town host Newquay as they continue to battle Tavistock for second spot in the SWPL Premier, while Helston Athletic look to build a strong finish to the season when Stoke Gabriel come to town.

Meanwhile, Division 1 West side Porthleven are set for a crunch clash at Liskeard in the race for promotion.

  • St Ives v Falmouth (Tribute Western Counties West)

Falmouth travel to Western Counties West champions St Ives on Saturday in the knowledge that a win would confirm their survival.

The Eagles’ win over Paignton last week put them up to tenth place, two points above Torquay who currently occupy the final relegation spot.

However, St Ives are called the champions for a reason – they have lost just four times this campaign, so the Eagles may have to rely on other results with relegation rivals Tiverton, Paignton, Crediton and Torquay all in action elsewhere.

The latter two sides face each other which should count in Falmouth’s favour, but with bonus points still up for grabs - plus both teams’ superior points difference - Falmouth could be in for a nervous afternoon.

Last time out: Falmouth 18-11 Paignton (April 14)

  • Tavistock v Penryn (Tribute Cornwall/Devon)

Penryn travel to Tavistock knowing that only a win will do if they are to stay in with a realistic chance of promotion from the Cornwall/Devon league.

The Borough suffered a narrow defeat to Saltash last weekend to concede the advantage in the race for promotion, and a midweek walkover against Wessex means that the Ashes now sit second with a game in hand.

Penryn won 43-24 in the reverse fixture on the opening day of the season back in September, and another bonus-point victory is nigh on essential for the Borough.

Last time out: Penryn 22-25 Saltash (April 14)

Football (kick-off 3pm unless stated)

  • Falmouth Town v Newquay (SWPL Premier)

Falmouth face Newquay at Bickland Park as they look to keep pace with second-placed Tavistock.

Town’s league cup-final opponents Tavy registered three wins in four days during the week to gain the upper hand over the Ambers and Saltash in the fight for second spot.

Meanwhile Town recorded a hard-fought win at home to Launceston on Tuesday, and ran promoted Plymouth Parkway extremely close on Thursday night before ultimately losing 2-1.

Last time out: Plymouth Parkway 2-1 Falmouth Town (April 19)

  • Helston Athletic v Stoke Gabriel (SWPL Premier)

Helston will hope to make it three wins in a row for only the second time this season on Saturday when Stoke Gabriel visit Kellaway Park.

After wins at Witheridge on Sunday and Torpoint on Thursday, a win over the Devon side will equal their best winning run of the season, which also included wins over Torpoint and Witheridge back in October.

The Blues are in fine scoring form, having bagged 11 goals in their two recent wins, and will look to add to that tally over a Stoke Gabriel side that have lost 11 of their 15 away games this season.

Last time out: Helston Athletic v Torpoint Athletic (April 19)

It is first versus second in Division 1 West as leaders Porthleven travel to nearest rivals Liskeard on Saturday, in a match which could have a massive say in who wins the title this season.

There are three other teams involved in what is a tight tussle for the title – Millbrook, Mousehole and Ludgvan – but whoever comes out on top at Lux Park will be leading the way as the season enters its final two weeks.

Last time out: Porthleven 5-1 Wendron United (April 18)
