Redruth’s Mark Lewarne finished in 13th place for Great Britain at this years ITU World Aquathlon Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Three places outside the season’s target of a top ten finish, and one place down on last year’s 12th on the Gold Coast, Australia.
The event, part of the World Triathlon Championships and World Super Series Grand Final, saw a strong field of athletes line up.
“After the first swim leg which was just over 1km, a gap already emerged with the leading contenders fighting it out at the front,” said Mark. “I was just in behind and sat with them for the first 200 meters and then a group of swimmers broke away, which left me to play 'catch up'.
“I was then onto the run leg which is my strongest discipline, I managed to claw back some places and close in on a top ten finish, but the finish line came too soon.
“I am a little disappointed as I was obviously targeting a top ten finish this year, however I finished only three places outside this target.”
“The plan now is to concentrate on swimming in the National League until December, then pick up the training again in preparation for next year’s world championships in Beijing, China. I would also like to thank my sponsors Follett Stock Solicitors of Truro, who have provided funding for the triathlon season and hopefully we can continue this support leading up to next years competition in China.”
