Football legend and World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst shared an evening of football anecdotes at St Michael’s Hotel and Spa on Saturday. More than 100 fans turned up to hear the former striker talk about England’s World Cup triumph in 1966 and tales of his successful football career at West Ham.
Sir Geoff made World Cup history as the only player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final, during the England versus Germany match and jokingly insisted the third ‘goal’ was “at least a yard over the line” on Saturday.
Yet it was grassroots football the legend was backing on Saturday as he officially opened St Ives Football Club’s new changing facilities and pavilion at the Saltings. Sir Geoff said: “To open the complex was a terrific thing to do. Local sport is about getting communities together and grassroot clubs are the unsung heroes.”
Peter Holgate, general manager at St Michael’s, said: “It’s was a great honour to welcome a footballing legends to the hotel.” The evening celebrations included a three-course meal, in St Michael’s Regatta suite, followed by a sports memorabilia auction.
The Football Association is looking to thank the heroes of grassroots football. If you know a volunteer, coach, club, administrator or league that has made an impact in your community then nominate them for an FA Community Award 2011 at thefa.com/yourgame.
