St Keverne win Ron Curnow Memorial Tournament
11:29am Thursday 2nd August 2012 in Cornwall
St Keverne were crowned champions of the Ron Curnow Memorial Tournament at Mullion football club on Saturday.
The contest took place between clubs on The Lizard Peninsula to honour Ron Curnow, who died last Christmas.
Ron was a stalwart of local football and four clubs close to his heart, Cury FC, Mullion FC, Lizard Argyle and St Keverne, honoured his memory by taking part in the tournament.
In the first of the semi-final matches last Tuesday, Lizard Argyle lost 2-3 to St Keverne. On Thursday, Cury beat Mullion Reserves 1-0.
Finals day was held on Saturday with Lizard Argyle beating Mullion Reserves 1-0 in the third/fourth place play-off.
In Saturday’s final St Keverne beat Cury FC 7-1 to win the competition.
St Keverne were presented with the trophy by Ron’s wife Kay and his two daughters.
The trophy and medals were sponsored by SM Cleaning Ltd, whose director is Stuart Massey.
He was co manager with Ron during Cury’s glory years, reaching the Junior Cup for the first time in their history.
Stuart said: “I know Ron would have endorsed such a tournament in his memory that keeps junior football very much alive on the Lizard Peninsula.”
