After midweek defeat in the Edwards Cup against Werrington, Falmouth captain Adrian Noott was no doubt looking for some kind of response from his players when they took on Redruth at Trescobeas on Saturday.

But even he must have been surprised with just how emphatic that response was.

Falmouth dismantled Redruth with almost embarrassing ease, barely breaking a sweat despite the soaring temperatures.

The visitors were reduced to 55 all out, with bowlers Justin Stephens and Anthony Angove yet again laying claim to the title of deadliest bowling partnership in the ECB premier division, taking a total of eight wickets between them.

“We talked about a response after the Werrington game and we were right on the money,” said Noott.

“We didn’t drop a catch all day, and we took all the chances we had. I thought we bowled in some really good areas. Anthony missed a game and can sometimes take a while to get back into things, but he was right back on it on Saturday. That’s how it’s been so far. They [Stephens and Angove] are both coming up trumps when we’ve needed them to.”

Falmouth are now just three points behind league leaders Werrington, and despite cup defeat against their fierce rivals, Noott said his side are confident they can challenge for the league title this season.

“It’s a totally different game, and we have a lot more experience in the long form, so we’re not getting worried about it, we’re just focussing on our own game and trying to get results ourselves.

“You have to hold your hands up and say that on the day we were beaten by the better team. They’ve been at the top of their game for a long time. But the mood afterwards was good, and I think we’re mature enough to just forget about it now.”

Falmouth visit Paul on Saturday in a game they’ll expect to win, having beaten them on three occasions already this season.

But Noott said his side would treat the match like any other.

“We’ve got to go in there and start from scratch,” he said, “We need to keep pressure on Werrington at the top.

“This is the first year we’ve been competing across the board and we’re taking nothing for granted.”
