ORGANISERS of the Cornwall Cricket League have accepted Troon Cricket Club’s request to withdraw from County One Division for 2015.

The club, who county champions in 1947, 1979, 1981 and 1995, told the league’s management commitment of their intentions to drop out shortly before the start of the competition’s Annual General Meeting in Truro last week.

They cited a loss first team players through transfers, injury and unavailability as the main reason behind the request, saying they will only be able to field one side next season made from second XI squad members.

After the required written submission was made, the committee announced on Monday they had accepted the withdrawl with Menheniot Looe taking their place in County One.

Troon, who have said they want to re-enter a second team in 2016, will now play in Division Two West.

A statement from the league said: “The Jolly’s Drinks Cornwall Cricket League Management Committee, after considerable discussion, has decided to accept a request from Troon CC for the immediate withdrawal of their 1st XI from County Division 1.

“Owing to the loss of a number of first XI players due to player transfers, long term injuries and unavailability caused by family and work commitments, Troon stated that they will only be able to field one XI this year.

“By moving down it was felt to be the best chance of sustaining the survival of a proud Cornish club with 140 years of history.”

Following the decision, Troon’s chairman Alan Thomas said: “Thanks to all the members of the LMC for granting our request.

“This decision gives our club the chance to regroup and hopefully, with time, regain its former glory.”

The club first competed in the league in 1908 and were ever presents in the Premier Division until they were relegated in 2004.
