FALMOUTH’S Christian Purchase and Glyn Furnival both made important contributions to Cornwall’s thrilling Unicorns Trophy win at Bournemouth on Sunday.

Cornwall only made 117 with last man Furnival making ten, in what proved to be a crucial last wicket partnership.

Purchase, four for 34, along with new professional Brad Wadlan, four for 18, then ripped through the home batting line up.

Dorset’s total of 105 is the lowest completed score against Cornwall in 82 games and 33 years of the one day competition.

Skipper Matt Robins, reflecting on the game, said “It was a strange pitch to bat on; nineteen wickets fell in the match to spin - which says it all really.

“It was a great start for Brad Wadlan. He seems to have fitted well into the team and is helping other players with their game, so should be a real asset.”

Wadlan certainly made his mark top scoring with 29 but the Cornwall batsmen were spun out by the experienced Tom Hicks who took six for 30.

Opener Matt Rowe made 25 before a collapse from 49-1 to 74-7. Paul Smith, 15, Kelvin Snell, 18, and Furnival, ten, got the total up to 117 all out off 35.1 overs.

Dorset got to 46-1 but collapsed themselves to 65-7. Opener Jake Lintott, 39, was brilliantly caught at mid-wicket by Furnival. He held onto a one handed catch, going over his head, and cart-wheeling in the process.

Mark Wolstenholme, 17, and Scott Thompson, 12, added 38 to see the hundred but end came within two overs as Purchase claimed the fifth LBW of the innings and ninth of the match.

Rowe picked up two wickets in just eight balls to leave the Cornish contingent jubilant. Wiltshire are next up on May 3 at St Austell.

They lost their opener at Newport on Sunday in a high scoring game, having made 280 in reply to the big Welsh total of 352.
