JAKE Preston's wonderful century steered St Gluvias to their first victory of the season.

The opening batsman smashed his way to 135 not out as the Penryn side beat Roche Old Boys by six wickets.

His ton featured 23 fours in it as the Saints made relatively light work of the target set by their hosts in the County One clash.

Poor weather has put pay to the opening two fixtures for the Saints, who won promotion from Division Two West last season.

However, despite clouds being around the ground, just like most of Cornwall on Saturday, rain finally subsided long enough for the game to be completed.

Jon Udy won the toss and elected to field first, but it took his side a little while to make a breakthrough as Adam and Neil Trudgeon put on 62 runs for the first wicket.

It was left to Udy himself to claim the first scalp as he got A Trudgeon out, caught by Matt Julian, for 21.

Lee Tarbuck came to the crease but was soon heading back to the pavilion as he fell to an LBW appeal from Udy for a three ball duck.

Trudgeon dug in with number four batsman Courtney Rowe as the pair put on 94 for the third wicket before the latter was bowled for 42 by Andrew Julian.

Richard Kellow eventually got Trudgeon out for 76, with Josh Kelly taking a catch, as the Saints managed to keep Roche to 223-6 from their 50 overs, with the second top scorer in the innings being extras as 57 were tallied up, 37 of them wides.

This included a rather peculiar incident and rare sighting of a dismissal for obstructing the field for number six Ryan Clark.

Preston immediately got to work chasing down the score in what looked like a one-man mission at times.

His dominance at the crease showed from the fact his opening partner, Kellow, scored just two runs in a stand of 23 and number three bat Ryan Dallimore chalked up four before getting out.

By the time the Australian overseas player was gone, the scoreboard read 68-2 as Preston crunched up the runs.

Roche could not find an answer to stop Preston and with four overs to spare, the Saints got past the winning post.

On Monday night, Preston hit another not out score, this time 32, as the Saints hammered Perranarworthal in the Vinter Cup at Kernick Road.

The hosts bowled out their local rivals for a meagre 58 as Preston but in a starring role with the ball too, claiming figures of four for 14.

Callum Hinchley picked up three wickets for nine while Kellow scored 25 not out as the Saints bashed their way to victory in 8.2 overs.
