FALMOUTH gave an encouraging performance to win by 109 runs at Newquay’s Sports Centre to move up to equal fourth after four Cornwall Premier League games, writes Michael Weeks.

After a wobbly start, the visitors battled their way to 231-9 off their 55 overs before Christian Purchase and Antony Angove bagged three wickets each to condemn their hosts to defeat.

Sean Hooper lost the toss and after being put in was first to go with only eight on the board.

Callum Whittaker made 25 and Angove 42 as they took the total to 59 before both fell in the space of ten runs.

A double blow followed with Christian Purchase bowled by Chris Kendall for ten and four runs later Harry Roberts was LBW to Godfrey Stevens for four to make it 86-5.

However Stefan Churcher hit 37 and Craig Mouatt 28 to add a valuable 71 for the sixth wicket.

There was a good finish provided by the tail as well as George Popperwell made 23 runs and Guy Leathley ended on 28 not out as they put on 45 for the ninth wicket.

Richard Spall, Chris Kendall, Martin Pearce and Tom Eggins took two wickets for Newquay.

Joe Crane, 26, and Godfrey Stevens, 37, gave early promise for the home side but the innings fell away from 37-1 to 122 all out in the 43rd over.

Spall made 20 not out to see the hundred up as the damage was done by Angove, who finished with figures of three for 25, and Christian Purchase three for 13.

Both were well supported well by Glyn Furnival and Popperwell with two wickets each and although he failed to pick up any scalps, Jordan Thomas bowled impressive spells to only concede 15 runs in eight overs.

On Saturday Falmouth entertain Camborne at the Hine Downing Oval.
