IF nerves were around Beacon Parc on Saturday then they certainly were not in the home changing room.

Helston hosted Callington for a top of the table clash in County Division One and sailed through their test with flying colours to maintain their unbeaten run.

They have now gone eight games without a loss this season as their early stranglehold on the division became firmer after a seven wicket victory.

Callington who themselves entered the clash without a defeat were skittled out for 127 in 40.4 overs as their batting line-up collapsed, losing eight wickets for 40 runs after reaching 87-2.

Spinner Werner Potgieter was the star man with the ball as the South African picked up his first five wicket haul, conceding 33 runs in the process, since joining Helston over the winter.

Home captain Dan Jenkin then hit 47 and Chris Martin 46 not out with victory secured halfway through the 26th over.

Thomas Retallack got opening batsman James Long out early for a 19 ball duck and soon had Joe White heading back to the pavilion for just three.

With the scoreboard reading 32-2, Callington needed a steady innings to steer them back onto the right path and it duly came as their own South African overseas player, Murray Workman, and Rhys Davies put on 55 runs for the third wicket.

Potgieter then got to work as he got Davies out four runs short of a half century.

The hosts knew Workman was a key man to knock over after he destroyed St Gluvias on the May Bank Holiday with a blockbuster 236 not out before following it up with an unbeaten 150 against Gorran.

So joyous scenes were had around the hosts at Beacon Parc when Potgieter got his fellow countryman out for 44, caught by Retallack, and what followed can only be described as a batting disintegration.

A knock of 12 from Tom Hughes got the visitors to 122-5 after Alex Robinson was out for a duck.

But Potgieter and Steve Jenkins twiddled their fingers and produce bowling which saw the last five wickets fall for as many runs.

Completing the victory was an easy enough task for Helston as their captain hit seven fours before falling to Robinson.

Martin finished the job off, smacking three sixes over the boundary rope.

Tomorrow the league leaders host Penzance in the Vinter Cup before travelling to Wadebridge on Saturday.
