DAN Jenkin believes Helston are the team no-one wants to face in the Vinter Cup semi finals after they knocked Premier Division side Penzance out of the Twenty20 competition.

On Wednesday evening, the early County Division One leaders won by 33 runs in the quarter final stage with 16-year-old Tommy Sturgess hitting 38 off 24 balls and Steve Jenkin 36 from 28 deliveries to reach 160-7.

Early wickets from Steve Eddy, who finished with figures of three for 27, saw Penzance's chase stall and end on 127-9.

Jenkin said he was delighted with his team's "tremendous" performance against a Premier Division side before adding he thinks Helston are the club other wants to avoid in the semis.

He said: "Obviously it would be nice to play our second team if they get through, but in all honesty at this stage it doesn't really matter who you face.

"St Just have a very good record in the competition and Truro and Falmouth are of course decent sides as well, so we all know we'll have to come up against a good team.

"But in truth, I think people are actually more worried about playing us in the semis because of our form and the confidence we have built so far this season."

Helston have now gone 12 games unbeaten this season in all competitions with ten victories, one abandonment and another cancelled due to the weather.

This form has seen Helston shoot to the top of the league table and Jenkin said defeating Penzance will only give them more reason to believe they can move up to the top division for the 2016 season.

"The main thing is that beating sides like Penzance is showing that what we are working towards is coming off and beating them fairly comfortably shows we can compete at the Premier level," Jenkin said.

"Everyone has contributed this season and on Wednesday, we found ourselves at about 90-4 and Steve and Tommy put together a partnership which saw us to a good score.

"Steve Eddy's bowling with the new ball was brilliant too especially with the fielding restrictions, but overall no-one let us down on the night.

"We've had a tricky run of fixtures, but I feel someone has given us a big performance when we needed one, which is what you need when you're under pressure."

In Wednesday's other Vinter Cup quarter final, defending champions St Just defeated Redruth by 11 runs.

Both of Thursday night's games, Hayle v Falmouth and Truro v Helston seconds, were postponed due to the wet weather.

The matches have been rearranged for Monday and Tuesday evening respectively.
