HELSTON’S impressive season continues and they lead the table by 24 points just before the halfway mark after a 120 run victory on Saturday, writes Michael Weeks.

They elected to bat at home against Beacon and topped 300 in a match reduced to 47 overs.

The start to their innings was not the greatest, losing Ross Leathley for seven and Dan Jenkin, who was caught off Dave Dowling, with the score at 44.

However, Mark Jenkin and Chris Martin added 153 for the third wicket to really put the hosts on the front foot for the rest of the day.

Jenkin hit a run-a-ball 82 which included 11 boundaries before being caught by Matt Floyd off Gareth Mankee, while Martin chalked up 91, falling short of a ton when Jak Hodgkins bowled him.

Tommy Sturgess put the icing on the cake with an unbeaten 51 off 40 balls, with seven boundaries, with Hodgkins ending the innings with figures of two for 65 in a six man Beacon attack.

The visitors got to 69 before losing Rob Trembath for 30 when he was bowled by Sturgess and then Steve Jenkin had skipper Darren Proctor caught for eight at 95-2.

James Gool went on to make 69 off 108 balls as the visitors reached a respectable 154 before losing their third wicket.

The experienced Kevin Thomas got 23 and Floyd 13, but none of the last six batsmen got to double figures and eventually they were all out in the 44th over for 181 to give Helston maximum points.

Jenkin took four for 35 from ten overs and Werner Potgieter wrapped up the tail with three for 30.

Tomorrow evening, Helston take on Premier League side Falmouth in the first Vinter Cup semi-final with the tie at Redruth starting at 6pm.

The winners will face either Truro or St Just, who meet at Hayle tomorrow evening.

In their next match after this Twenty20 bash, they will make the short trip to St Gluvias to complete the first half of the season.
