HELSTON’S season took a turn for the better on Saturday with an important home win by 38 runs over neighbours St Gluvias, writes Michael Weeks.

They won a high scoring game at Beacon Parc and then learnt their lead had been doubled to 24 points, thanks to Callington’s three wicket defeat at St Minver, to end their six match winning run.

After electing to bat, Helston suffered an early loss with Andrew Bowden dismissing Ross Leathley for a single with only five on the board.

But following this dodgy opening, a big second wicket stand of 142 between Dan Jenkin and Mark Jenkin set them on the road to a big total.

The latter was the first to go for 86 off 90 balls, which included 15 fours, before the team's skipper followed not long afterwards having reached his fourth league half century of the season, departing the crease with 51 to his name.

Both fell to spinner Phil Bostock, who in a good spell also got Chris Martin for 11, without a run added.

He then took the wicket of Tommy Sturgess, LBW for eight at 182-5, to help him finish with figures of four for 22 off ten overs.

There was more to come however for the home side as Ben Rule made 36 and Werner Potgieter a useful 32 not out to make the final score of the innings 267-7.

Bowden, Scott Kellow and Jake Preston took a wicket each.

St Gluvias lost Andrew Julian to Tom Retallack for 11 before Ryan Dallimore followed to Gavin Tregenza at 65-2.

Matt Julian made 19 before being caught and bowled by Steve Jenkin, who was making a welcome return following a shoulder injury.

The Saints were kept in the game as Preston and Scott Kellow added 79 for the fourth wicket, but this partnership was ended by Mark Jenkin, who got the breakthrough with Preston caught and bowled for 76.

He then repeated the feat to remove Kellow for 52.

Richard Kellow made 34 not out but the overs ran out with the visitors 38 runs short of victory.

Jack Gleadowe and Mark Mitchell were both run out to give Helston a third bowling point.

Jenkin completed a good day with two for 31.

On Saturday Helston visit Beacon, who have slipped down to ninth having lost their last three games while Callington host basement side Menheniot Looe.

St Gluvias play Gorran at Kernick Road.
