IT was a disappointingly soggy weekend for Falmouth with both their scheduled Premier League games being called off, writes Michael Weeks.

Saturday morning’s heavy rain meant the trip to Truro was never a serious possibility, as was nothing played west of a line from Wadebridge to Liskeard.

In the east, nine matches were able to be started, though only five finished.

Conditions did not get much better on Sunday with the rescheduled Premier League programme from July, ironically heavily affected.

Falmouth’s trip to Camborne was called off after the downpours of the previous 48 hours left parts of Roskear waterlogged.

As a result, Werrington have emerged as favourites to take the league title after an army of a dozen or more worked on their Ladycross ground from 8am to “Get the Game on” as hoped for by the current ECB initiative.

These efforts provided dividends as a 70 over game got underway against Penzance at 3.15pm, after an early tea. Werrington made 215 for 5 before bowling Penzance out for 134 to open an 18 point lead over Truro.

In the west St Just beat Grampound Road by 40 runs.

This was also agreed to count as their twice postponed Premier 50/50 semi final, enabling the final to go ahead against Werrington on September 6 at a neutral venue.

Falmouth’s two Bank Holiday weekend games see a mid-table trip to Redruth on Saturday before Monday’s home game with third placed St Just.

It is just about job done for St Gluvias in County Division One, who need just 12 points from their last three games to ensure survival.

All of this is assuming Launceston pick up a full sixty of course.

The Saints host Wadebridge and visit title chasing Callington this weekend.

With a 34 point cushion above the bottom three, Falmouth seconds should survive comfortably in Division Two and they host Camborne on Saturday.

Likewise so should Stithians, who are a further three points better off.

They are at second placed Troon before hosting Falmouth in a derby on Monday.

With third spot in Division Three almost certain to be a promotion place, with two eastern teams very likely to be relegated from County One, Constantine have a big weekend ahead.

They are currently in fourth, eight points from a promotion spot but only 15 points off the pace with two derby games over the weekend against lower placed teams Wendron and Mullion.

If Perranarworthal have a strong finish, they could also feature in the shake up.

On Saturday they host doomed Barripper before Monday’s trip to Hayle.

St Gluvias seconds will virtually ensure a promotion spot with another win in Division Four and are at relegation threatened Gulval before hosting leaders Penzance on Monday, where victory could give them a title chance on the final day.

Perranarworthal seconds will win the Division Five title if they win their last three games, starting at St Gluvias on Sunday and then St Ives at Tredrea the following day.

In Division Six, mid-table Mawnan travel to St Buryan on Saturday to play Penzance thirds and then host Hayle thirds.
