IT was not much of a weekend for Falmouth who went down to Cornwall Premier League defeats at both Redruth on Saturday and at home to St Just on Monday, writes Michael Weeks.

Proceedings were close at Trewirgie it has to be said in the first match Redruth won by one wicket with three balls to spare.

When their last man, Cornwall Under 15 Piran Kent, joined Neil Hornbuckle the Reds still needed 24 to win with nine overs to go.

Hornbuckle went on to make 101 not out and Kent survived 12 balls to edge them over the line.

There were two wickets each for Jordan Thomas, Christian Purchase and Sam O’Nyons.

Earlier Stefan Churcher made 43 and Thomas, batting at three, hit 30.

Purchase chipped in with 27 as the visitors reached 135 for three at one stage before they fell to 194-9 in a full 55 overs.

On Monday at the Hine Downing Oval, St Just were dismissed for only 151 but it proved to be more than enough.

Neil Curnow made 31 before being the third wicket to fall at 62, after Philip Nicholas and Laurence May had fallen to Thomas and Leathley.

Gavin Edwards, Djali Bloomfield, Josh Semmens, Mark George and last man Ryan Harvey all got into double figures to get a useful total on the board.

Glyn Furnival took three for 26 and Thomas took two for 21 off a tidy 11 overs.

Leathley and Purchase had identical figures of two for 35 from eleven overs.

Callum Whittaker, 15, and Kieran Rodda, ten, put on 30 for Falmouth’s first wicket.

Thomas, again batting up the order, made 27 before being sixth out at 70.

The innings collapsed however with the last six wickets falling for just 26 runs as Gareth May took four for 31 and there were two each for Bloomfield and Mark Harvey.

Falmouth are guaranteed to finish seventh in the table.

They complete their season with a vitally important game at Penzance on Saturday.

Penzance can avoid relegation, if they win with maximum points and Camborne pick up seven points or less at Redruth.

The title will be decided if Werrington take six points or more at Grampound Road, assuming that Truro take maximum points at home to St Austell.
