Falmouth had what only can be described as an “off day” at Werrington on Saturday where they went down to a heavy defeat.

In truth the journey to Ladycross took longer than the Falmouth innings as they were overwhelmed by the home side, who are closing in on their first ever Premier title.

Werrington completed their home programme with an emphatic ten wicket victory, by 2.30pm, in a game that only lasted 28 overs.

Falmouth elected to bat and were swiftly shot out for 49 by the two county opening bowlers Alex Smeeth and Sam Hockin. Both ended with figures of five for 19 with the innings only lasting 15 overs.

After losing Chris Farndon for a duck Richard Kellow made 13 for the visitors as they reached 20 for one before he was dismissed by Alex Smeeth.

Then it all went wrong as Antony Angove was lbw to Hockin for one and skipper Adrian Noott lbw to Smeeth for 4. Only Justin Stephens with ten not out got double figures as the last nine wickets fell for 28 runs. Four players failed to score.

Seb Street (13no) and Nick Ward (24no) then knocked off the runs without being parted in just  11 overs.

Werrington now need seven points from their final game at Camborne on Saturday to take the title.

Falmouth could finish fourth if they beat Grampound Road at Trescobeas.
Elsewhere last weekend St Just had back to back wins against Camborne by 19 runs  and by eight wickets at Truro on Sunday, in a game brought forward from this weekend.

It meant they went to the top of the table for the first time this season. Callington won at Grampound Road by three wickets and St Austell beat Paul by 33 runs in a low scoring game, with Stanny Simon taking nine for 30. Truro won at Troon by eight wickets. Paul now need a maximum of four points in their clash with Troon on Saturday to survive.
