A PENALTY in the dying seconds from Illogan’s Jason Roberts denied Helston a much-needed victory on Saturday.
This was always going to be a hard- fought game, as both teams needed the points and Helston were looking to bounce back from a heavy loss to Veor last week.
Taking only the positives from their last match, Helston put in some hard training this week, which paid off on the pitch.
Illogan however were the first on the scoreboard. Helston gave away a penalty within minutes of the kick off, which was converted by Illogan fly-half Andy Hawkins.
Then as they went into the second quarter, Helston started to build their stages of play and looked confident as Illogan were unable to brake their defence.
Helston’s forwards took the ball into ruck after ruck, with the backs lining themselves up in readiness to receive the ball. Once the call was made the ball came flying out along the backline to the wing.
Helston then switched play by stepping back inside, which saw Devere Bond go over for a fantastic try. The first half went to Helston with the score ending 3-5. At half time Gary Mcstein, Helston’s coach, could only praise his team, and asked them to just give more of the same.
The second half went much the same as the first, with the forwards dominating play. When the ball did come out it made for good entertaining rugby. The play went from end to end, with neither of the teams managing to break the opposing team’s last line of defence. The only points in the second half came courtesy of the boot of Illogan’s Jason Roberts, with Helston giving away another penalty within their own 22, right in front of the posts with seconds remaining.
Helston with the kick off powered back down the pitch and were awarded a scrum as Illogan had knocked the ball on. The ball came flying out of the scrum to the backs, who with quick hands got the ball out to the wing. They then stepped back inside again to find Bond who took the ball into contact on Illogan’s try line.
However, Illogan managed to turn the ball over, kicking it into touch for the end of the game.
This Saturday the RBS Six Nations starts with all matches being shown live in the bar at Helston Rugby Club.
