Clinton SC A look to be well on course to defending their Mining Snooker League title again after last week’s matches.
While they were winning 4-1 at Four Lanes, their nearest challengers, Penponds A, went down to a 4-1 defeat at St Day. Clinton A now lead the Division by 12 points from Penponds A, who still have two matches in hand.
Clinton A’s match at Four Lanes saw some good snooker, with Scott Bray making a fine 64 break and Phil Lane a 46. Gary Bray (32 break) beat Graham Allen, after Graham had made an opening break of 34. Super-sub Colin Mills beat Steve Downing for Four Lanes’ only success. Keith Hosking was the only winner for Penponds A at St Day.
Bell’s Court are now in third place despite losing 3-2 at Godolphin Club, where Raymond Anderson made a 35 break for the home team. Illogan HI A are still in with a chance of honours after a 3-2 victory over Redruth British Rail A.
Neil Rowe for the Railmen beat Nick Mutter after Nick had made a 30 break. The relegation places now seem to rest between Penponds B, Illogan B and Godolphin. Bell’s Court and Lanner now share the lead in Division 2. Lanner beat Perranporth Golf Club B 3-2, aided by a break of 42 from Dave Thomas, while Bell’s Court lost 3-2 at Feock. For Feock Jamie MacCuish equalled his own highest break of 55, but amazingly this was beaten on the same evening.
Paul Broad made a break of 58 for Redruth RBL in their 3-2 victory over Park Bottom, in which Paul’s young son Brett also played well to beat Park Bottom’s Clarence Richards.
Elsewhere leading contenders St Day went down to a shock 5-0 defeat at Perranporth Golf Club A to put a dent in their prospects of honours. Camborne Conservative moved out of the relegation zone after beating Radnor Golf Club 5-0.
Illogan HI now lead Division 3 by eight points after beating Radnor Golf Club 4-1 last week. However, second-placed Bell’s Court also beat Camborne Conservative 4-1 and have two matches in hand on the leaders. Four Lanes have slipped up recently and went down to their third consecutive defeat, 3-2 at Clinton SC, whose Mike Johns threatened the highest break with a good effort of 38. Simon Hosking (Penponds) made a superb break of 123 recently in a Mining Youth match against young Carl Mitchell, winning 3-1.
This is believed to be the highest break by a youth player in a Mining Competition, and one of the highest in Mining League history.
The Mining Snooker League has arranged a Challenge Match against Cornwall (East) on Saturday, February 27, at the Redruth Club (7.15 pm).
There will be ten frames of snooker and a pasty supper is available for £1.50. All welcome (free entry). Doors open at 6pm.
