Climax proves damp squib
The dramatic climax to the battle for the runners-up spot in division one of the Mining Snooker League did not really materialise as expected last week, as although Redruth RBL lost 4-1 to champions Clinton SC A in their final match, long-time rivals Illogan HI went down to a heavy 5-0 defeat at the hands of Godolphin Club.
This meant that Redruth RBL claimed the runners-up spot by five points. Illogan, however, are to be congratulated on a tremendous season, finishing in third place, a position that few would have predicted at the start.
Steve Downing made a 76 clearance for Clinton SC A at his former club, and there were two 31 breaks from Phil Lane. Alan Hurley took Redruth RBL's only frame. Clinton A themselves topped the 100 points mark for the season, no mean achievement in a five-man team format.
Godolphin Club were in fine form to scupper Illogan's chances, including a 36 break from Raymond Anderson. Elsewhere there were some good breaks, including a 50 by Darren Davey (Clinton SC B), in their 3-2 victory over Breage, with Justin Watters replying with a 47 for Breage.
Paul Matthews contributed a 40 break as Redruth British Rail won 3-2 at Penponds to finish just above them in fifth place. Lanner finished next to bottom after losing 3-2 to Bell's Court (Bobby Southworth 35 and 39 breaks), although Graham Beard made a 31 for Lanner in beating Paul Williams.
In division two St Day need three frames going into their final match this week against Illogan HI B to take the title. Last week they beat Camborne RBL 4-1, while Four Lanes took a point less in winning 3-2 at Redruth RBL Youth. James Stevens made a 35 clearance for the Youth team to beat Garth Dower, while Graham Allen made two 24 breaks for Four Lanes.
Both Four Lanes and St Day are now sure of promotion from the division, but Four Lanes finish their season with a bye, so it is out of their hands. Camborne RBL's defeat meant that they are sure to finish in one of the bottom two places.
With one match left for all teams in division three, Feock are favourites to take the title, with Park Bottom being the only team capable of snatching it from them. Park Bottom are three points behind the leaders and were due to play the bottom team, Redruth Club B, this week, while Feock had a slightly more difficult fixture away to Penponds. Both teams are already sure of promotion.
Last week Park Bottom beat Clinton SC 3-2, although Steven Veasey made a nice 37 break for Clinton. The Clinton C team are to be congratulated on reaching the final of the five-a-side handicap in which 11-year-old Aidan Johns shone in beating St Day's David Annear and Steven Veasey potted a great final black for victory.
