Three wheels on their wagon is all they need
BIG HIT: The three-wheel Reliant Robins
BIG HIT: The three-wheel Reliant Robins

The question to be raised at the United Downs Raceway, St Day on Sunday afternoon, will be: "Why have four wheels, when three will do?" That's because Reliant Robin racing will be one of the fun attractions of a hugely entertaining Bank Holiday fixture that also includes the English Championship for Saloon Stock Cars, and the third Cornish outing of the national season for Formula Two Stock Cars.

Never before have Robin Reliants been raced at St Day, despite a variety of fixtures for them throughout the rest of the country. Typically, seeing a "Plastic Pig" driving along the road is often enough to raise a smile, so there is going to be considerable fun, chaos, excitement and comedy when as many as ten of them are raced on a short oval circuit.

The "three-wheelers" made an appearance on Easter Monday at Smeatharpe, near Honiton, after which there was a clamour for them to be given a first ever outing at the United Downs Raceway, St Day.

Amongst the drivers who plan to race a Robin Reliant, are Toby Tiddy of Penryn, Sam McGall of Foxhole, Nathan James of St Columb Road and Jeremy Moss of Fowey.

New national grades will come into force for the Formula Two Stock Cars, for the first time this season. A driver's grade determines his grid position on the national handicap system. Drivers have been graded on performances since the start of the season, up to April 15 inclusive.

Ross Rowe of Radnor is one of the westcountry drivers whose early season form has netted him a grade promotion. It has been an eventful start to the season for Rowe, who has managed a sprinkling of race wins, as well as a rollover at the last meeting at the United Downs Raceway, St Day in early April. For May, Rowe will return to the star grade.

The heavyweight, hard-hitting Saloon Stock Cars will be making their second appearance at St Day in 2008, when the coveted English Championship will be at stake.

The English title was last raced for at St Day in 2004. A most impressive entry from the westcountry, the south east and East Anglia, will converge on Cornwall, with drivers eager to earn the right to wear the cross of St George on the roof of their car for the next 12 months.

The reigning champion is Craig Barnett of Dereham, Norfolk. He has not previously raced at St Day, but will travel west, with his brother Darren. Two more pairs of brothers are due to journey to the South West also - Jamie Sampson and National Champion Lee Sampson of King's Lynn, and Steve and Andi Newman of Spalding.

Another pair of brothers - Steve and Shaun Webster - will head south from Sheffield. On Easter Sunday, when the Saloon Stock Cars were last at St Day, National Points Champion Shaun Webster was the final winner, and he was the day's leading points scorer.

His brother, Steve Webster, is the current World Champion in Saloon Stock Cars, and he plans to race his brand new car, which was on display at the NEC in Birmingham earlier this year, for the very first time.
