League clarifies final positions

The final positions in the West Cornwall Table Tennis League have now been resolved, writes Brian Nicholls. Not unexpectedly, Bridge A won the Premiership League, but not without a rearguard action by Falmouth Docks A who closed the gap to just a two points difference between the teams.

St Austell A finished in bottom position on 67 points, but so close was the scramble that four other teams recorded 68 or 69 points.

Bridge C comfortably won the division one title by 28 points with Falmouth Docks E occupying bottom spot. The two other Docks teams gained good wins in the final quarter of the season to finish in second and third positions.

The closest fight for top honours goes to the top four teams in division two. Peoples Palace E and Cornwall College B finished on 110 points each with Palace winning the title by way of having won one more match than their rivals. Falmouth Docks F with 106 points were third beating Penpol by just four points. It was a fine effort by Penpol who have played a large number of matches with only two players. Saracens, with a single win and scoring just 27 points, fills the bottom position.

A closely-run fight between three teams was resolved eventually by Peoples Palace H in division three. Mylor C and Forest Green shared second and third spots with 140 points each, seven points behind Palace. Falmouth Watersports B prop up this division with 36 points.

Not to be outdone by their clubmates and rivals from the four higher divisions Cornwall College C and St Ives C were also involved in the mad late scramble for points. College secured the title by just three points with both sides having each won 17 matches, drawn two and lost two.

Newcomers to the league, Goldsithney, finish sixth with a respectable sixty three points whilst Peoples Palace J with a late surge of points confined Cape Cornwall C to bottom position.

The winning and runner-up trophies for the season together with other league awards will be presented at the league's annual dinner to be held at Lowenac Hotel, Bassett Road, Camborne on Friday, May 23, 2008.
