Striker Rob Wearne has signed for Falmouth Town, and said he hopes to feature for John Dent’s side when they face Witheridge at Bickland Park this weekend.

Wearne, Newquay’s top-scorer with 10 league and cup goals so far this season, told Peppermints boss Alan Carey of his decision to leave Mount Wise and return to former club Falmouth in a telephone call last week.

One of Newquay’s standout performers this season and a fan favourite, he played his last game in a red and white shirt on Saturday when they were beaten  0-2 at home by Witheridge.

Wearne left Falmouth for Newquay in the summer, but said his relationship with former Town manager Carey had become strained in recent weeks, and as soon as he knew Falmouth were interested in bringing him back to Bickland Park he was keen to put pen to paper.

“I originally left for football reasons,” he told the Packet earlier this week.

“I felt it was an exciting project because Newquay were new to the league and had brought in a lot of new players.”

And yet despite performing consitently well and regularly finding the back of the net, Wearne found his first team opportunities limited in recent weeks.

“I was scoring plenty throughout the season,” he said, “but for whatever reason I seemed not to be in the manager’s plans. I was the top goal scorer and found myself on the bench a lot, which was a bit confusing.

“When I asked him about it he said we had four strikers in the side and he was trying keep everyone happy, which I didn’t really understand. So eventually I rang him up and and said I wasn’t enjoying my time at the club, and said he’d accept any approaches for me, and that was that.”

News of Wearne’s unhappiness at Mount Wise alerted Falmouth manager John Dent, who wasted no time in making an approach to sign the player.

And the talented youngster said that as soon as he knew Falmouth were interested it was an easy decision to make.

“Last season at Falmouth I felt I was treated the best I ever have been at a club, that’s the main reason I wanted to come back,” he said, revealing he had turned down offers from several premier division teams.

“They were the first club to ring me. Then when people knew I was leaving other clubs came in and asked about me, but I’m not someone to go back on my word. I knew I wanted to come back to Falmouth.”

Town manager Dent said Wearne could make his debut as early as this weekend when Falmouth host premier division high-flyers Witheridge at home.

And the former Penryn Athletic striker may find himself lining up alongside another Penryn old boy, new signing Kayne Trevaksis. It would seem Falmouth are suddenly spoiled for choice up front.

“I played with Kayne at Penryn a couple of years ago,” said Wearne. “He’s a good target  man and I’m used to playing off another striker, so it could work really well.”

Dent was coy about whether Trevaskis and Wearne would start together, but said he was pleased to add another proven goalscorer to the side.

“Rob will be in the squad on Saturday for sure,” the Town boss said.

“We’re really happy to have him back. When we spoke he told me he enjoyed it here before and was sorry to leave.

“Now we just want him to score some goals for us and enjoy his football again.”
