CARETAKER boss Wayne Hughes feels Falmouth Town showed Odd Down too much respect in their FA Vase clash on Saturday.

The Ambers went 3-0 down against their opponents who are two divisions above them in the Western League Premier.

They did manage to produce a valiant fight back though against their hosts in the second half, but fell just short as they lost 4-3.

Hughes, who has now had three games in charge since John Dent’s resignation last month, believes a better start would have seen Town through.

He said: “In the first half I thought we gave them a bit too much respect and we didn’t really try and play the way we wanted too.

“We made a couple of changes just after half time and that injected a bit of enthusiasm into the side.

“I think at the end Odd Down were holding on and one way of looking at it is that we won the second half 3-1, which is a good thing for us.”

Down went 2-0 ahead inside the opening 15 minutes through strikes from Troy Simpson and Joe Raynes.

Then with five minutes to go before the break, Simpson popped up again to extend the home side’s lead.

However, Town came out in the second half looking more determined and pulled one back inside the first couple of minutes as Mike Vanes scored.

Kayne Trevaskis and Josh Burton then came on for Town and they helped the visitors keep their energetic start going.

With 20 minutes to go, the sense a comeback was on occurred when Burton cut the deficit to just one goal.

But with ten minutes left, Down increased their lead again through Kye Simpson as the striker broke away and slotted the ball home.

Town did not give up though and Ross Pope made it 4-3 just before the end, but the away team did not have enough left in the tank to find a fourth goal.
