FALMOUTH Town are looking a lot stronger and more together as a club after a turbulent season so far.

This was the message from their caretaker manager Wayne Hughes who took temporary charge of the South West Peninsula League Premier side last month after John Dent’s resignation.

Since taking up the hot seat at Bickland Park, Hughes has seen the team win 3-0 at Callington Town, lose 4-0 against second placed Bodmin Town and go out of the FA Vase 4-3 at Odd Down.

Last night, after the Packet had gone to press, Town visited fellow strugglers Newquay and have another away trip on Saturday at Launceston.

Hughes, who had been in charge of the club’s reserves, said although the results have not all gone their way, there is more positivity around the side.

He said: “Even though we’ve had a couple of losses, we gave Bodmin who are one of the best sides in Cornwall and Devon a scare as the score didn’t reflect the nature of the game and at Odd Down we gave it a good go in the second half.

“The guys are all giving 100 per cent and everyone is pulling in the right direction.

“We have a good group of players at the club and recently we’ve been trying to pull all the sides together.

“This is benefiting the club as a whole as it is getting us more united and help make us stronger.”

A full-time replacement for Dent has not been announced yet by the club with Hughes saying he would consider the job if offered.

However, he went onto say he is not looking too far ahead into the future.

“I’m just doing my bit for my hometown club and I am just taking it game-by-game for now,” Hughes said.

“If I was asked to take the role on full-time, I would have to sit back and give it consideration.

“But at the moment, I’m not thinking about that and all I want the players to do is put their focus on their football and let that do the talking rather than off the field situations.”
