HAVING gone three games unbeaten in the South West Peninsula League Premier, hopes were high for Falmouth Town going to Torpoint Athletic.

With two wins on the bounce against other teams in the same part of the table, Newquay and Stoke Gabriel, confidence was even higher going into Saturday’s clash.

However, the Ambers could not produced another success this time round as Wayne Hughes’ men fell to their first defeat since last month.

The only symmetry from their positive run came in the form of the final score, 2-1, which was by the same result Town had inflicted on recent victims.

A sign of things to come occurred early on for Falmouth as Jason Peters was forced into producing a good save to prevent Ben Applegate from breaking the deadlock.

There was not much Town’s stopper could do in the 24th minute though when Applegate put through team-mate Scott Blatchford, who proceeded to send his shot past Peters from eight yards out.

Tom Whipp rejoined Town from Athletic, after departing Bickland Park in the summer, and he came close to getting an equaliser against his ex-colleagues just before the break.

He could not find the target though and shortly after the hour mark, a fantastic solo effort goal put Torpoint 2-0 up.

Reece Shanley picked up the ball on the halfway line and made a dart towards goal, evading a couple of challenges on his way into the penalty area before blasting a shot past Peters.

Town did not capitulate and set up an exciting finish when with 12 minutes remaining, Whipp created a chance for striker Kayne Trevaskis which he duly took.

But despite back in the game, the visitors could not find another way through the hosts’ defence.

The defeat did not affect the Ambers’ position in the league table and next up for them on Saturday will be top half team Plymouth Parkway, who travel down to Bickland Park.
