CHANCES were spurned by both sides on Saturday as Falmouth Town drew 0-0 at Exmouth Town.

It is the second stalemate this season between the sides and also continued the hosts’ remarkable run of playing seven South West Peninsula League Premier matches in 2015 and drawing all of them.

Starting the day, the Ambers were nine places below the team who finished as the division’s runners-up.

But Town gave their higher positioned opponents a run for their money over the 90 minutes, creating plenty of opportunities of their own.

Their manager Wayne Hughes said: “It probably wasn’t a bad time to play Exmouth with the run they’re on, but they are still a good side and they had their boss Kevin Hill playing for them.

“When you are playing against a side who have Torquay United’s top appearance maker in their squad, it is always going to be tough going up against them.

“But the lads created chances, which was great to see and we had our chances to win it, so that is a little disappointing.

“But you cannot be unhappy when you pick up a point against a side like Exmouth because of the quality they have and I’m happy with how the guys played.”

Glen Squires nearly broke the deadlock in the first half after a lovely pass by Luke Appleton, but the striker could not beat Mike Searle who pulled off a great save.

After the break, both teams looked to push forward in search of a goal with Tyler Dobinson having a shot well saved by Jason Peters.

Joe Cooper will feel he probably should have scored when he headed towards goal, but despite having the net at his mercy, the effort went inches wide.

Exmouth had a strong finish to the match with Dan Boere’s shot from 25 yards out crashing off the bar before Peters again saved brilliantly at point blank range from Mark Saunders’ header.

Next up for Falmouth is a trip to league leaders Saltash United and Hughes hopes his side will be confident to deal with the task.

“It will be tough again,” he said.

“Ross Pope wasn’t able to play at Exmouth but is available for Saltash which is a boost and we are looking to give Harry Clarke his debut, so hopefully he can have an impact.

“All I want the lads to do is just go and have a go at Saltash and we’ll see what happens.”
