Falmouth Town 2, Torpoint Athletic 1

TEN-MAN Falmouth Town overcame their numerical disadvantage to defeat Torpoint Athletic in their Walter C Parson Cup quarter-final tie at Bickland Park on Saturday, writes Matt Friday.

Jordan Annear and Luke Brabyn scored for Town, who had Marcello Jones sent off in the first half. Curtis Damerell halved the deficit for Torpoint but Falmouth advance to the semi-finals.

Prior to kick-off there was a presentation for goalkeeper Ryan Barnes, who recently made his 100th appearance for the club in their Cornwall Senior Cup defeat to St Austell.

The big talking point came on the half-hour mark, when a scuffle between the two sides resulted in Jones picking up a second yellow card after he was booked 10 minutes earlier.

Despite this, Town took the lead in first-half added time when David Broglino sprinted down the left flank and crossed to Annear, who steered the ball into the far corner.

Their momentum continued into the second half with Broglino narrowly missing the target with his chipped effort, before Brabyn struck to double the hosts’ lead on 48 minutes.

However their celebrations were tempered four minutes later when Torpoint forced their way back into the game. Gary Hird’s shot was blocked but it fell to Damerell who smashed home.

The visitors had two chances to equalise a few minutes later when Danny Zalick saw his effort tipped over by Barnes, before Damerell headed wide shortly after.

Falmouth had their own opportunities to extend their lead and put the game to bed, but Brabyn and Annear both missed one-on-ones against Torpoint goalkeeper Jason Peters.

Torpoint had one final chance when Bahros Zad laid the ball off to Lee Bevan, but his shot went wide to the relief of Town, who will now look forward to their semi-final.
