Falmouth Town boss Alan Carey has signed a new striker Glen Squires for the club, but this week hit out at Newquay AFC’s secretary after the official refused to allow him to play in their opening game of the season.

Squires agreed to join Falmouth last week. However, in the South West Peninsula League, clubs have to put in a seven-day request for players meaning Squires would not be available for Falmouth’s opening game against Torpoint.

But Newquay manager Glynn Hooper agreed to waive the seven-day notice freeing the striker up to play. This move was then blocked by the Newquay secretary.
Speaking after Saturday’s match, Carey, said: “There is a sort of golden rule within football if the managers agree to waive the seven day notice, the secretary does tend to release him, but that didn’t happen.

“He has stopped the boy playing football today, which I find absolutely outrageous as to why one official in a club can do that, but there we go it is the rule. It is not normal practice. Normally once the  managers say I’m happy to waive the seven days, to let him go, it is normally done.

“In this incidence it didn’t happen for whatever reason. I don’t know what the reasons are, whether it is personal between Glen and the secretary, I don’t know. It is a bit disappointing, but at the end of the day, that is the rule.”

Squires has joined Falmouth in the aftermath of Matt Drummond’s injury, when he fractured his fibula in a pre-season defeat to Bodmin Town.
Speaking about Drummond’s injury, Carey, added: “Matt is going to be out for some considerable time, there is no doubt about that. That was a bad blow to us last Sunday, to lose one of our top scorers. Thirty-five goals he scored for us last season and he is a quality striker at that. You just don’t find one of them right away.”

However, Squires does look to be the player Carey has picked to fill Drummond’s shoes.

The striker is strong and quick and netted 25 goals for Newquay last campaign. “He is a lad that can score 25, 26 goals a year,” said Carey. “He has got a bit of pace about him so we will bring him into the side. We have got young Matt Laity to bring back  as well, so we have got a few faces still to come into the side.”
